We all like to receive recognition for the work we do, don't we? It's human nature to feel pleased when someone says, "Good job. Well done!".

As a small business owner working from home most of the time, it's usually down to me to give myself a pat on the back when a job goes particularly well. Of course, I have family, friends and business associates I can tell about successful projects but - more often than not - when I client thanks me for making a real difference to them with a piece of writing, a PR campaign, a video or a media training session, it's me who gives myself a congratulatory 'hug'. That's the nature of being a one-woman business!

So it was lovely to end last week with the news that If... Media had been chosen from over fifty nominees from Devon and Somerset as one of five businesses shortlisted in the "Best sole trader or micro-business" category of the 373 Group Business Awards 2018. Last year, I made it to the final three in the 'Best Professional Service' category. I'll find out how I fare in this year's awards next week, as the winners are due to be announced at a ceremony at Escot House on Thursday, July 12th.

I have my fingers crossed too for my friend and associate Sue Cade, a fellow PR consultant and copywriter, with whom I enjoy working when we find projects to collaborate on (pictured above with me at last year's awards). I'll also be "pulling" (excuse the pun) for Exeter's team of four oarswomen, Row for the Ocean, the plastic-free eco-warriors I nominated for "Greatest Social Impact".

I'll keep you posted on how we all get on.

And in my next blog, I'll be telling you about some of the successful award submissions I've produced for my own clients, and the clients of the handful of agencies I work for.
