As a small media business in the South West, it’s great to collaborate with and champion other creative professionals in the region - especially when their work has won national acclaim.

Trailblazers launch

It’s an exciting week for Somerset-based photographer Anita Corbin. Four of her iconic portraits have just been unveiled as part of an exhibition entitled Trailblazers.

It’s just opened at Newcastle’s Discovery Museum and explores the achievements of groundbreaking women who’ve made their mark in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths over the last 250 years.

There are 24 portraits in the exhibition, drawn mainly from the National Portrait Gallery collection. Anita hopes at least one of the four women she photographed for Trailblazers, Jane Atkinson, will also feature in Anita's own First Women project as a female pioneer in engineering and industry.

First Women

Anita’s spent her career promoting positive images of women. Her personal project First Women will be unveiled in 2018 to mark 100 years of women’s suffrage. It'll include her own creative photographic portraits as well as documentary and archive material she's gathered.

I first heard about First Women when I met Anita at a (ladies’) networking event, and was struck by both her passion for what she does and her vision of what she wants to achieve.

Over a number of years, in the run up to 2018, Anita is shooting and collecting one hundred portraits of 21st century women who’ve achieved the title of “First Woman” in their own particular field.

I  know she’s still looking for more female subjects who can lay claim to such an accolade so, if you’re one of them or know someone who is, Anita would love to hear from you.

Working together

I’ve recently had the pleasure of working with Anita on a video to help spread the word about First Women and how people can get involved in this inspiring project.

If... you’d like to find out more about First Women UK - from the woman herself! - the short film we shot with Anita is now on our video gallery and on If... Media's vimeo page. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it!
